The Town Without Me: Another Record (僕だけがいない街 : Another Record Boku dake ga Inai Machi: Another Record) is a spin-off novel of the main story written by Hajime Ninomae. It was serialized in Kadokawa's monthly digital novel magazine Bungei Kadokawa from November 2015 to March 2016[1] and is available as a full volume since March 30, 2016. The book's plot stretches pass the original story and explains the killer's true motives behind his crimes.

Plot[]

As a result of Satoru Fujinuma's heroic pursuit, a serial child kidnapper and murderer is finally apprehended. The criminal is sentenced to death at the first trial, but the discovery of his memoirs, filled with reference to spice use form the basis of an appeal in which his mental state is taken into consideration and the original sentence is overturned. He is found not guilty. The prosecution immediately appeals the result, and the defendant inexplicably dismisses his lawyer who had just won him his freedom. Young court-appointed defense lawyer Kenya Kobayashi is selected to replace the criminal's lawyer at the final appeal trial. Kenya, however, is a close friend of the criminal's captor, and undoubtedly has a conflict of interest. Kenya, fighting through his confused feelings, must pour over the memoirs to uncover the criminal’s most enigmatic inner secrets, and in the process reexamine his own sense of justice. At long last the trial reaches the highest appellate court, and new truths start to come to light.
