Kenya Kobayashi (小林 賢也 Kobayashi Kenya) is one of Satoru's primary school classmates and best friend.

Appearance[]

In primary school, Kenya is commonly seen wearing a black turtle neck, a trench coat, red shoes, and sometimes earmuffs. Both when he was older and younger he has blond hair. When he is older he is seen wearing a grey blazer and slacks.

Personality[]

Kenya is intelligent, thoughtful, and cares deeply for his friends. Throughout his childhood he was highly perceptive and analytical of his surroundings but struggled to speak up about his suspicions, preferring to mind his own business, act wit caution, and not cause trouble. As the series progresses, inspired by Satoru Fujinuma, he learns to take action to advocate for what's right and even grows up to become a lawyer. He is often seen holding holding a book and maintains a relaxed, nonchalant expression. He is kind, but also somewhat detached from others as he spends his time working hard to excel in sport and academics. However, although he excels in his pursuits he doesn't feel fulfilled by praise and high results. After joining Saturo's group he learns to understand friendship better and the value of connecting with others.

When Saturo goes into the past, Kenya immediately notices a shift in his behaviour and understands his intentions. Kenya tests Satoru by bringing up a book that never existed and then confronts him about his sudden change in character. When Satoru tells him about his mission Kenya immediately believes in him and offers his help. Feeling guilty for realising something was wrong with Kayo but not taking action, Kenya opens up to Satoru and pledges to stop at nothing to keep everyone safe. By thinking everything through logically he prevents Satoru from taking rash decisions and thinks of effective plans. At the beginning of the series he swiftly realised problems but kept his distance and silently observed, but after watching Saturo take risks he gradually develops the courage to take action rather than play it safe. By the end of the show Kenya is more pragmatic and proactive as he becomes a lawyer and pursues Saturo's attempted killer. He remains loyal to his friend and urges Saturo to confide in him so he can help.
